Today, energy efficiency has never been more of a priority for many organisations, and new ways of achieving better efficiency are constantly sought after. One way of becoming more energy efficient is to encourage your team to take action.

The benefits are clear. Carbon Trust estimates that an organisation and reduce its energy costs by at least 10 per cent with small behavioural changes. Businesses are starting to recognise the importance of individual actions.

Communication is key to be successful in this approach; you must be able to clearly communicate the advantages of energy efficiency to your employees and ensure they understand its importance.

Energy efficiency strategy

It is important to establish an energy efficiency strategy and clearly communicate it to your team. This can help employees understand their part in saving energy, and if the strategy is adhered to, it can be transformative to the business. If you are to make serious energy savings, your strategy needs to help you and your team measure, monitor, and control your energy usage, as well as make your energy goals clear to all.

Employee awareness

Awareness is a huge factor for any organisation looking to improve energy efficiency. Employees need to know what, why and when, as far as saving energy is concerned.

There are a number of initiatives that can help, such as:

  • Running awareness campaigns
  • Establishing energy champion groups
  • Supporting external energy events (e.g. Energy Saving Week)

Helping employees comprehend energy usage can be useful. For example, by letting employees know how much it costs to run the office but in a way that is meaningful to them, such as explaining that lighting a typical office overnight wastes enough energy to heat water for 1,000 cups of tea. An example such as this is going to be far more meaningful than telling them how many kWhs it’s using.

However you approach energy efficiency, it is important that you regularly communicate how seemingly small actions have had a larger impact on the organisation, and how this will benefit employees. Has it reduced your organisation’s carbon footprint? Has it improved your bottom line, freeing up budget for bonuses or extra training? It’s important to communicate how your employees’ contributions are helping the organisation and helping themselves.
